Description

Boehme (Jacob) The Works of Jacob Behmen, The Teutonic Theosopher, 4 vol., first collected edition in English, 23 engraved plates only (of 25), of which 3 with moveable onlays (one of these laid down to sheet), 2 folding and 1 hand-coloured, one folding plate with panels torn and loosely inserted, extensive annotations and ink notes to margins in contemporary hands, vol. 1 with small additional illustrations pasted-in to margins from elsewhere (some glue stains), ink stamps to titles, vol. 4 only with half-title, some browning and spotting, occasional stains, modern drab cloth, [Caillet 1289], 4to, for M. Richardson [-G. Robinson], 1764-81.

⁂ First collected edition in English of the works of Jacob Boehme or Behmen, German philosopher, Christian mystic and Lutheran theologian, whose ideas caused controversy in his own day but also much influenced the thought of William Blake.
