⁂ An Account of the Royal Geographical Society expedition with John Hanning Speke in search of the source of the Nile in 1858-59. After Burton fell ill, Speke carried on without him, as he did not believe that their location was the source. He was the first European to discover what he named Lake Victoria, and claimed it to be the source but Burton disputed it, leading to a long-running and bitter feud between them.
