⁂ The last item is an account of one of the most celebrated English criminal trials of the 19th century. The Shrigley abduction was a case of forced marriage by Edward Gibbon Wakefield to the 15 year old heiress Ellen Turner of Pott Shrigley, Cheshire. They were married in Gretna Green and reached Calais before her father was able to notify the police. The marriage was anulled by Parliament and Gibbon and his brother William were sentenced to three years each. After his release Edward Wakefield became involved in prison reform. He later had roles in the development of South Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
