Murder & Execution .- The Whitechapel Murder. Henry & Thomas Wainwright, were arraigned at the Bar of the Old Bailey, on the 22nd of Nov., for the wilful murder of Harriet Lane, at 215, Whitechapel Road, on or about the 11th September, 1875, broadside ballad, little staining, lightly browned, mounted on card with 2 other broadside ballads relating to the same case, the mentioned 249 x 175mm., H. Such, Borough, [c.1875].
⁂ Henry Wainwright was a brushmaker who murdered his mistress Harriet Louisa Lane in September 1874 and buried her body in a warehouse he owned. When he was declared bankrupt he disinterred the body in September 1875 and attempted to rebury it with the help of his brother Thomas and another brushmaker Alfred Stokes. Stokes was suspicious of the contents of the parcels he had been given and opened one to reveal human body parts, which he immediately reported to police. Wainwright was hanged in December 1875. His brother was found guilty of being an accessory after the fact.
