Description

Bacon (Sir Francis) Sylva Sylvarum, first Latin edition, translated by Jacob Gruter, additional engraved title, woodcut initials and decorations, occasional ink annotations and corrections by a contemporary hand, a few rust marks, upper hinge cracked, else a very clean copy, contemporary calf, sympathetically rebacked preserving old spine, rubbed and bumped, some cracking to joints, 12mo, Leiden, Franciscus Hackius, 1648.

⁂ The first Latin edition of Bacon’s most celebrated work on natural history. This volume also includes The New Atlantis, Bacon’s unfinished utopian narrative outlining his vision of an ideal society and of scientific progress in the mythical land of Bensalem, including his conception of the ideal ‘university'. The translator, Jacob Gruter, occasionally provides the original English in footnotes to clarify his Latin rendering.
