Orosius (Paulus) Historiae adversus paganos, edited by Aeneas Vulpes, collation: a-m6, 72 ff., 45 lines plus headline, Roman type, 3- to 9- line white on black woodcut initials, a few guide spaces for initials, e2-5 loose, ink stain to e5, a few tiny worm holes towards end, later vellum, upper board slightly warped, folio (300 x 211mm.), Venice, Christophorus de Pensis for Octavianus Scotus, 1499.
*** Seminal history of the pre-Christian ancient world written by 5th century Portuguese historian, Orosius, who was in close contact with the greatest minds of the day, including Augustine of Hippo and Jerome of Stridon. Orosius' work remained a key source for the study of antiquity until the Renaissance, and is recognised as being of great historiographical importance for the Medieval period.
Editor Aeneas Vulpes (Enea Volpe), was Prior of Holy Cross monastery in Vicenza, where his version of the text was first printed in about 1475 (Goff O97). 'The mention of Scotus [died 24 Dec. 1498] as publisher is perhaps merely taken over from his 1483 edition (IB.21196), which is the archetype of this' (BMC).
