A Visual and Historical Voyage into the Ottoman World: the Library of a Gentleman

Thursday 14th November 2024 | 1:00 pm | Lots:

This collection focuses on conveying an accurate historical and visual understanding of Turkey and the Ottoman empire from the 16th through to the 20th century by focusing on 400 years of Ottoman history, voyage, and costume portrayed by prominent politicians, historians, and travellers in the Levant.  The collection focuses sequentially on the most important historical works embellished by illustrations contained in the key architectural, travel and costume books.  Historical works include both key political works as well as many important historical reference volumes.  The content is further highlighted through illustrations found in seminal costume and architectural books from the past 400 years.   For example, Ottoman costume is found in Nicolay’s and Belon’s 16th century work, Chalcondyle’s and La Chappelle’s 17th century work, Ferriol’s  illustrations from the early 18th century, and through Brindisi, Mayer, Dalvimart, Preziosi, Hamdy Bey, and other costume works of the 18th-20th centuries.  Similarly, architecture works from Grelot, Pertussier, Cassas, Lewis, Roberts, Choiseul-Gouffier, Fossati, Chenavard, and others provide a rich visual architectural perspective. The collection thus serially presents the rich history of Turkey brought to life through a visual focus.
