Founded by C.H.St John Hornby in 1895, the Ashendene Press operated until 1915 in Chelsea and was revived after the war in 1920. In 1902, Hornby publishedThe Song of Songsin an edition of only 40 copies. Although many of the Ashendene books were not illustrated, this famous edition was illuminated by the master calligrapher Florence Kingsford. The press’s magnum opus is Dante’s Tutte le Opere(1909).
