South America.- Lasso de la Vega (Garcia) The Royal Commentaries of Peru, 2 parts in 1, first edition in English, translated by Sir Paul Rycaut, engraved portrait frontispiece by R. White after Lely, 10 engraved plates, the last with brown stain along centre, 6F3 with paper flaw causing small hole with slight loss of text, title printed in red and black, lacking 3 preliminary ff., contemporary panelled calf, rebacked, corners worn, [Wing G215; Palau 354801; Sabin 98760], folio, Printed by Miles Flesher, for Samuel Heyrick, 1688.
⁂ One of four variant imprints, printed for different booksellers, this with fewer institutional holdings and so likely the scarcest. ".. [Rycaut] had a very slight knowledge of the Spanish language and he did not scruple to make wild guesses at the meaning of sentences, and to omit whole chapters. Thus he only gives fourteen out of the twenty-six chapters in the first book, and sixteen out of the twenty-six in the second."--C.S.
