Description

Kraft (Johann) Pomona Austriaca, 2 vol., French and German text, superb hand-coloured engraved frontispiece to vol.1 lettered in gold, 200 fine hand-coloured engraved plates the last 20 in vol.2 laid down over the original plates, captions to first 110 plates in German only, in French and German to the rest, vol.1 French title date altered to '1816' and German title dated 1816, marginal repair to one text leaf in vol.1, water-stain to title and French preliminary leaves in vol.1, list of subscribers, contemporary half calf, gilt spine, a little rubbed, [Nissen BBI 1097; Dunthorne 174; Oak Spring Pomona 50], folio, Vienna, A. Baumer & Rudolph Graffer, 1796.

Superb copy of one of the rarest of all pomological works. Only 37 subscribers are listed and include an impressive array of Central-European nobility. According to all the best authorities the German edition preceded the French, but they date it to 1797. It is reasonable to speculate that early in the life of this copy, perhaps in 1816, the German edition was rebound to include the French text before the German presumably to avoid breaking the existing text block. This French text would have been supplied either directly from the publisher who scratched out the dates, or from a defective or incomplete copy of the French issue. It is certain that the French text had at some time been separate from the rest of this copy, as the inner margins of the text bear damp-staining, which is not present on the frontispiece, German text or the plates.

Provenance: The pastedowns bear a shelf ticket and pencil note "(coll) Metternich", possibly from the library of Prince Klemens von Metternich [1773 - 1859], Austrian politician and statesman. Later bookplate of Sir Thomas Neame.

Very rare, only the defective Plesch copy of the 4to edition with French text has appeared at auction in recent times (1975).
