Blood Transfusion.- Lower (Richard) The Method observed in Transfusing the Blood out of one Animal into another, contained in Philosophical Transactions No.20, by T.R. for John Martyn, 17th December 1666 bound with 6 other extracts from Philosophical Transactions with reference to transfusing the blood (Nos.19, 22, 25, 28, 30 & 54), together 7 works in 1 vol., first editions, lightly browned, worming to inner margin of final paper just touching a couple of letters, ex-library copy with old ink stamp to title of first paper (No.22), bound out of order in modern boards, 4to, 1666-69.
⁂ Collection of early works on the transfusion of the blood. In 1666 Lower successfully transfused blood in dogs, leading him and Edmund King to perform a blood transfusion on a human patient in a demonstration before the Royal Society in November 1667. Results were mixed and, until the discovery of blood types in the early 20th century, it was a highly risky procedure and discontinued.
