[Apperley (Charles James)], "Nimrod". The Life of a Sportsman, first edition, first issue with 4 mounted plates, hand-coloured engraved additional title with vignettes, portrait and 34 plates by Henry Alken, 4 trimmed and mounted as issued, extra-illustrated with two original states of two of the mounted plates (untrimmed and with original captions and imprints dated 1838), one with short marginal tears, plate at p.348 'The Tandem' in second state, 10pp. advertisements at end, some spotting, mostly to tissue guards, bookplate of Joel Spitz featuring portrait of Henry Alken and with his pencil note re the additional plates on front free endpaper, original pictorial blue cloth, gilt, rubbed, recased, new endpapers, preserved in cloth drop-back box (spine faded), [Tooley 65], 8vo, R.Ackermann, 1842.

⁂ "Considered by many to be the premier coloured plate sporting book in the 19th century." Tooley

The two additional plates, both dated 1838, prove that the work was planned some time earlier but publication was delayed until 1842. The four plates already produced were then trimmed and mounted with new captions.
