Fell (John, Bishop of Oxford, 1625-86), William Jane, Church of England clergyman, bap. 1645, d. 1707) & Henry Compton, Bishop of London, 1631/2-1713) Reference in favour of Robert Farrow, Master of Arts & Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, D.s. "Jo. Oxon", "William Jane" & "H: London", manuscript, slight stain at head and tail, laid down on card, folds, slightly browned, folio, 20th May 1685.

the result of a mischievous translation of a Martial epigram by a disciplined student, Thomas Brown, stuck in the popular memory longer than the preoccupations of the man to whom it refers. It seems to touch a truth about the energetic, determined, effective, partisan, and sometimes sanctimonious man who made a profound contribution to Restoration Anglicanism and who in many respects was Restoration Oxford." - Oxford DNB.
