Accompanying this letter is a typed, signed note from Selina Hastings, the recipient's daughter and Waugh's biographer explaining the context: Waugh was at the time writing Vile bodies and wished to make a comic reference to their famous ancestor, to which end Lord Hastings loaned him a two volume biography.
