Africa.- Explorer.- English School (19th century) Portrait traditionally understood to show a young David Livingstone, bust-length, in a feigned oval, oil on board, 177 x 145 mm. (7 x 5 3/4 in), later ink inscription on reverse: 'Dr Livingstone', unframed, probably mid-19th century.

⁂ Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was a pioneer medical missionary, an explorer in Africa, and one of the most popular British heroes of the late-19th-century.
