Londonio (Francesco, 1723-1783), Five head studies of sheep and goats, black chalk on laid paper, historically laid down onto a sheet of backing paper with watermark 'F co B', 190 x 185 mm. (7 1/2 x 7 1/4 in), inscribed 'Del Londonio' verso by an 18th, possibly 19th century hand, unframed

Born in Milan in the parish of S. Alessandro in Zebedia, Francesco Londonio studied with Ferdinando Porta, and travelled to Parma with his master, where the works of Correggio made a deep impression. The Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan hold some 250 drawings and oil sketches by the artist, where a comparable oil sketch with studies of goats' heads is held.
