⁂ Reform Judaism began in Germany and Central Europe from around the turn of the 18th century. The first Reform Synagogue was inaugurated in Hamburg in 1819, for which this book was published. Here, for the first time, changes were introduced to the Hebrew prayers. This was met with an almost inevitable backlash from a large swathe of the rabbinical leadership.
