Lot 284
Spanish School (probably 18th century)
Penitent Mary Magdalene, with two kneeling figures beside her in ornate niche
Hammer Price: £650
Description
Spanish School (probably 18th century)
Penitent Mary Magdalene, with two kneeling figures beside her in an ornate niche
Black and red chalks, wash, on laid paper without watermark, sheet 377 x 238 mm (14 3/4 x 9 3/8 in), hinged onto mount (unframed)
Provenance:
Professor David Davies (1937-2022), a specialist in Spanish painting, in particular in the works of Velázquez and El Greco;
Thence by descent to the present owners
⁂ Possibly a modello for an as yet unidentified painting. The handling of the drapery and modelling with dense cross hatching suggests a competent Spanish artist. The execution bears some stylistic similarities to the drawings of Mariano Salvador Maella (1739 -1818)—for instance see Inmaculasa Concepcion (Fondation Custodia, Paris, inv. 1974-T.62) and Anunciacion (Real Biblioteca de Palacio, Patrimonio Nacional, Album of Ferdinand VII, t. II, f. 64, dib. 100)—but it is possibly by an earlier hand.
