Royal Navy.- Sutton (Samuel, Captain, officer in the Royal Navy, 1760-1832) Group of documents relating to Captain Samuel Sutton's service in the Royal Navy, collection includes: a manuscript agreement between Sutton and Thomas Hardy “to continue to share Prize Money in whatever ship or situation we may be from the 16th day of May 1804, signed by both Sutton and Hardy on board the Amphion at sea, 8th June 1804 & 1805; letters, memorandums etc. from Sutton seeking promotion, medals, support for his claim to be made Knight Companion of the Bath for his services at the Battle of Copenhagen, 25 January 1815; a pencil sketch, possibly by Sutton, depicting a naval fight with French ships; and other letters, also including a copy of a letter from Admiral Nelson in support of Sutton's claim, 6 February 1802; together c. 35pp. & other items, folds, browned, v.s., v.d., 1802-15 (c. 20 pieces)

⁂ Sutton commanded the Alcmene at Copenhagen, was a friend of Nelson's and briefly captain of HMS Victory at Trafalgar.

Provenance: From the descendants of Julia Harvey, who married Sutton's son in 1837.
