Estimate: £1,500 - 2,000

Description

Chinese Communist Propaganda.- Desiat' let Kitayskoy Narodnoy Respubliki [The Tenth Anniversary of the People's Republic of China], first and only edition, text in Russian, 2 tipped-in frontispieces of Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi with tissue-guards, numerous photographic illustrations, of which 12 printed in colour and 10 folding, 1 folding illustration a little creased, original cloth, gilt spine with red label, upper cover with red and gilt emblem of the People's Republic of China, dust-jacket, tear to foot of joints, one longer running into panel, small stain to upper cover, light surface soiling, light rubbing, chips and short tears to extremities, housed in original cardboard box, remnants of paper label to lid, very light rubbing, large 4to, [Beijing], 1959.

⁂ Richly illustrated photobook, celebrating a decade of socialist China. The design of the work is ostentatious, especially when compared to most Chinese publications from the 1950s. The work recounts the jubilant 10th anniversary celebrations held on and around China's National Day (1 October 1959). Included in this work are reprinted addressed by political luminaries, vistas of popular post-1949 architectural landmarks, such as, Tiananmen Square and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, and closes with reprinted congratulatory messages from other countries and fraternal parties, sent to China.

The work is a product of the period when Sino-Soviet relationships had reached their peak. In 1959, the Soviet Union had provided China with financial, technical and military assistance, and accounted for more than half of the Chinese foreign trade.
