Mathematics.- Optics.- Mydorge (Claude) Prodromi catoptricorum et dioptricorum, sive conicorum operis ad abdita radii reflexi et refracti mysteria praevii & facem praeferentis, 2 parts in 1, first edition, with initial blank, title with woodcut device, woodcut diagrams, 2 errata leaves at end, signed presentation inscription from the author to Christian S. Zeuggman to title, ink inscription to first errata f. and some errata corrected in an early hand, damp-stained with leaves cockled throughout and frayed at edges at beginning and end (particularly to title, loss to front endpapers and initial blank), lightly browned, contemporary vellum, damp-stained, folio, Paris, I. Dedin, 1631.
⁂ First edition of this important treatise on conic sections, intended to provide the geometrical basis for the study of optics. Claude Mydorge (1585-1647), who published mostly under the acronym D.A.L.G., shared a great interest in optics with Descartes and exchanged several letters with him on the subject. The two parts of this work were re-issued in 1639 together with a new part 3 & 4. As in other known copies of the first edition, the first errata f. in this copy includes an inscription relating to p.36 signed "D.A.L.G." and a small ink-stamp with the author's arms to lower-margin.
