Cassiodorus (Magnus Aurelius) Historia Ecclesiastica Tripartita, collation: a–l8 m6 n4 A6 B4, double column, 108 ff., 54 lines plus headline, Gothic type, guide spaces for initials, frequent ink notes to margins in an early hand, some of these slightly trimmed, l8 loose, a few other ff. towards rear nearly so, one or two ff. strengthened at gutter, later half vellum, 4to (205 x 152mm.), [Paris], Georg Wolf, [c.1494-95].
⁂ A copy of Cassiodorus's seminal history of the early church which has been carefully read and annotated by a scholar, the notes making frequent references to early Church Fathers such as Ambrose, Athanasius, Gregory of Nazianzus, Isidore of Spain as well as comments on Imperial figures. The text was first printed in Augsburg in 1472.
Provenance: inscription in same hand as notes to n4 dated, 26 November 1518 Saragossa; ?later inscription to title, "Ex conv[entus] ?Riparoli" (possibly Ripoll, Spain).
