Description

London.- Havell, Junr. (Robert) An Aeronautical View of London, aquatint and etching, an excellent impression with full hand-colouring, on thick wove paper, image 300 x 1025 mm (11 3/4 x 40 1/4 in), sheet 430 x 1090 mm (16 7/8 x 42 7/8 in), wide margins, some repaired marginal tears and small losses restored, handling creases, some abrasion and careful areas of restoration, surface dirt, notably to centre right margin, hinged into mount, unframed, published by Havell, 1836

⁂ Ralph Hyde observes in Gilded Scenes and Shining Prospects (Yale, 1985) that the print is not a conventional bird’s-eye view but rather a “balloon view,” as indicated by Havell’s key, which specifies that the scene was drawn from a point 402 feet above the River Thames.
