Bible, English. Holy Bible (The), Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New: Newly translated out of the Originall Toungues, Robert Barker, 1613.

Hammer Price: £4,200

Description

Bible, English. Holy Bible (The), Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New: Newly translated out of the Originall Toungues, double column, black letter, 72 lines, woodcut initials, Kalendar printed in red and black, NT title within elaborate woodcut border, lacking general title but supplied in facsimile, John Speed's Genealogies before text (A-C6, without map), very occasional small annotation, mainly to Booke of Psalmes, A2 with some small loss and repairs, A3 trimmed at foot and mounted on stub, A4 & B6 of Genealogies & 4K2-5 with marginal fraying or loss, affecting ruled border but not text, NT title with small repair to inner-edge to verso, final f. creased with some small text loss and laid down, the odd small chip or tear or repair, a few times affecting text or with small loss (see C6, Z6, 2S6, 3U6), trimmed quite often into headline, lightly browned throughout with some light damp- or other staining, but generally good, 18th century calf, rebacked and recornered, preserving original backstrip with red morocco label, some wear to old covers and spine, [Herbert 322; STC 2226], folio (390 x 250mm.), Robert Barker, 1613.

⁂ An example of the 'She-Bible' version of the King James Bible, distinguishable from the other folio version of 1613 by its smaller type in 72 lines per column. The She-Bible nomenclature stems from the typographical difference in Ruth 3:15 between early printings of the King James Bible, in some the verse reading 'and she went into the city', while in others it is 'he' who went into the city, known as the 'He-Bibles'. This discrepancy, being the most famous of several such examples, has sparked comment ever since.

Provenance: Thomas Chisnal (18th century ownership inscriptions to A2&3 and final f.); Badder family (manuscript record of births from 1765-85 to 3T5v); Richard Munday (partially erased ownership inscription to final f. verso).
