Botany.- Saint Simon (Maximilien Henri Marquis de) Des Jacintes, de leur Anatomie, Reproductione et Culture, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author to Lord Effingham, 'Remembrance given very heartily from the Marquis Saint [Simon] to his Lordship Lord Effingham to whom he confers to be indebted with a word of friendship not alone from the [...] but from the utmost of his heart. Given in bruxelles 15 avril 1768', engraved title vignette and 10 folding plates, title trimmed at fore-margin, affecting a few words of inscription, occasional light spotting to plates, [Hunt 602; Nissen BBI 1718; Pritzel 7996], Amsterdam, 1768; bound with another work also inscribed 'by the same author [&] given by the same heart', together 2 works in 1 vol., contemporary calf, joints split, rubbed, § [Bazin (Gilles Augustin)] Observations sur les Plantes, J. d'Aguilar bookplate, modern calf-backed boards, [Horn-Schenkling 960], Strasburg, 1741 § Cirillo (D.M.L.) ⁂ The first mentioned is a first edition of the most important work on hyacinths published in the 18th century. A very interesting association copy. The second work bound in, titled 'Discours Addressé à l'Academie Royale des Sciences de Berlin, avec un Livre intitulé: Des Jacintes...', was separately published and is not usually bound in with this work.
Bazin (1681-1754) was a French naturalist who practised medicine at Strasbourg and wrote several treatises on plants and insects.
Cirillo (1739-99) was an Italian statesman and naturalist. He taught botany at the University of Naples. For political reasons he was condemned to death by King Ferdinand IV.
