West Indies.- Du Tertre (Jean Baptiste) Histoire Generale des Antilles habitées par les François, vol.1 & 2 only (of 4), first edition, engraved additional pictorial title, titles with woodcut device, engraved or woodcut head-pieces and initials, engraved coat-of-arms, 3 double-page maps and 14 plates, 5 double-page, some shaved close, errata at end, one or two small marginal tears (one repaired), contemporary mottled calf, gilt, a little rubbed, corners bumped, rebacked with crown and coat-of-arms featuring three lions & three fleurs-de-lys in gilt at foot of spines, 4to, Paris, Thomas Jolly, 1667.
⁂ Important work by a Dominican missionary on the Antilles, an archipelago in the West Indies, and difficult to find complete with the two later volumes of 1671. The maps show St.Kitts, Guadeloupe and Martinique, the plates depict native industries and the flora & fauna, and include the plate of naked natives which is sometimes missing.
