Botany.- Asia.- Hooker (Joseph Dalton) Illustrations of Himalayan Plants, first edition, pictorial lithograph title and 24 plates, all finely hand-coloured, a few plates loose or becoming so, original cloth-backed pictorial boards, slightly rubbed, [Great Flower Books p.60; Nissen BBI 910; Stafleu & Cowan 2973], folio, 1855.
⁂ First edition of Hooker's second work on Himalayan plants with magnificent hand-coloured plates. The original drawings were done by native artists and redrawn by W.H. Fitch. Included in the 176 subscribers was Charles Darwin, to whom Hooker had dedicated his 1854 'Himalayan Journals'. The book was originally to have been published with the financial support of Cathcart (with whom Hooker had stayed in Bengal) and to be distributed free to 'the principal botanists and scientific establishments in Europe'. However, Carthcart died 49 years old on his way back to London at Lausanne. The book was then financed by the family as well as by others.
