Trees.- Belon (Pierre) De Arboribus coniferis, resiniferis, aliis..., first edition, collation: ã4 ê4, A-H4, 8 woodcut illustrations, minor worming throughout, mostly to margins and gutter, occasionally affecting sidenotes, modern boards, [Adams B555, Nissen BBI 131; Pettegree 56728; cf.Wellcome I 758, another issue], 4to, Paris, E.Corrozet, 1553.
⁂ The first work on coniferous trees, and one of the first botanical books to cover a single species. Belon was the first to name all cone-bearing trees 'coniferae', a term which was followed by Gesner. Descriptions are given of the various species including their locations and he cites authorities such as Dioscorides. Pierre Belon (1517-1564) was one of the most original naturalists of the Renaissance and one of the first explorer-naturalists. Between 1546 and 1550, he undertook long voyages through the Levant and the Middle East.
Three issues appeared, the other two had an imprint of Cavellat or Benoît Prevost.
