Description
Butterflies.- Sepp (Jan Christian).- de Graaf (Willem Diederik Vincent) [Inlandsche Kapellen in beeld], 170 fine original watercolours, with traces of pencil, neatly bordered with black ink, silhouette portrait frontispiece, title provided by lettering to spine, interleaved, 1 plate with tear at gutter running into border but not touching image, a few plates reinforced at gutter, armorial bookplate, splitting to gutter, hinges starting but holding, later cloth, spine lettered in gilt, 4to, [Enkhuizen], [1800-40].
⁂ Remarkable and unique collection of beautiful watercolours of Dutch butterflies and caterpillars, together with their feeding plants. The watercolours resemble the style and perfection of the plates by Jan Christian Sepp.
Willem Diederik Vincent de Graaf (1762-1846) was a druggist and entomologist, and a close friend of Jan Christian Sepp. Sepp mentions de Graaf in volume 3 of "Beschouwing der wonderen Gods', on pages 42, 49, 90, and 93, which strongly suggest that de Graaf had supplied Sepp with numerous caterpillars and butterflies. The fact that de Graaf was also an entomologist makes it most likely that the drawings are by him.
The watermarks in the album indicate a date between 1800 and 1840.
