Plantæ Javanicæ Rariores, first edition, 50 engraved plates all but 3 finely hand-coloured, some double-page, engraved folding map, text in Latin and English, occasional light foxing, Henry Rogers Broughton bookplate, contemporary green half morocco, gilt, t.e.g., [Nissen BBI 934; Stafleu & Cowan 418], folio, 1838-52.
⁂ A beautifully bound copy of this rare work on the flora of Java. Horsfield lived in Java for 16 years, where he assembled a herbarium of around 2,100 species. Upon his return to England, Horsfield entrusted Robert Brown with the identification and cataloguing of the specimens; the determinations and descriptions were mostly the work of Bennett. The fine plates are from drawings by John Curtis, who also engraved a number of them.
