Birds.- Zinanni (Giuseppe) Delle Uova e Dei Nidi degli Uccelli, first edition, Carlo Allioni's copy with his ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper, engraved allegorical frontispiece, 3 section titles, and 30 plates (of which 22 of eggs and 8 of grasshoppers), contemporary boards, paper label to spine with manuscript title, slightly soiled, edges uncut, [Anker 161; Nissen IVB 1031], 4to, Venice, Antonio Bortoli, 1737.
⁂ A fine copy, in original condition, of "the first work dealing exclusively with birds' eggs and birds' nests" (Anker p.22).
An interesting association copy - from the library of Carlo Allioni (1728-1804) the famous Italian botanist, with his name on free end paper. It is accompanied by a treatise on grasshoppers illustrated with 8 finely engraved plates. The birds' eggs specimens were taken from Giuseppe Zinanni's own private museum.
