Description

Pomology.- Annales de Pomologie Belge et Étrangère, 8 vol., 384 hand-coloured lithograph plates, (text sometimes lightly offset onto plates, a few plates trimmed with occasional loss to captions), vol.7 front free endpaper nearly loose, occasional foxing, original cloth-backed printed boards, rubbed and soiled, large 4to, Brussels, 1853-60.

Excellent copy of one of the rarest pomological publications. This work is unrecorded in many major botanical references including Pritzel, Nissen, and Plesch. "Of all the pomological publications, published around the middle of last century this is without doubt the most important one and also the most beautiful." (Hortus Belgicus, 67). In the 19th century, Belgium became the centre of flower and fruit cultivation on the continent and a number of important periodicals and monographs were published which belong to the most beautiful on this subject.
