Gardens.- Royal Arms.- Rapin (Rene) Hortorum libri IV cum Disputatione de Cultura Hortensi, first edition, engraved frontispiece by Poilly after Le Brun (ink inscription at foot), engraved title-vignette, head- and tail-pieces and initials, ink inscriptions and stamp to title, some ink marginalia, 6ff. with manuscript notes bound at beginning and end, contemporary red morocco with arms of Louis XIV, g.e., [Hunt 324], 4to, Paris, E Typographia Regia, 1665.

An exceptional copy of Rapin's celebrated poem on gardens, an undisguised imitation of Virgil's 'Georgics'. It is divided into four books: on the flower-garden, parkland and trees, water, and the orchard. In the final prose piece, a debate between the ancients and moderns on gardening styles, Rapin endorses the modern style. The work was translated into English by John Evelyn.
