Zoology.- Italy.- Costa (Oronzio-Gabriele) and A.Costa. Fauna del regno di Napoli ossia enumerazione di tutti gli animali, 11 vol., 377 engraved plates ?only (Wood calls for 382, some light browning) most with hand-colouring, 1 or 2 plates and text ff. loose, some plates and ff. laid down, occasional spotting and soiling, mostly to text, 9 vol. uniformly bound in modern half vellum, gilt spines with red morocco labels, 2 vol. in contemporary half morocco, slightly rubbed, both housed in modern half vellum slip-cases (same binding as other 9 vol.), [Nissen ZBI 971; Wood p.301], 4to, Naples, [1829]-1859; and Davies Sherborn's detailed collation of the work in 'Journal of the Soc. For Bibliography of Natural History' (12).

Copies of the above survey of the animal kingdom of Southern Italy are extremely rare. We can trace no complete copy at auction. Antiquariat Junk offered a copy in 1979 with 380 plates and the Bradley Martin copy (Sotheby's NY, 1989, hammer $31,000) had 384 plates. This work, edited by Oronzio Gabriele Costa (1787-1867) professor at the University of Naples and continued by his son Achille, is bibliographically very complex and collations vary.
