Fauna del regno di Napoli ossia enumerazione di tutti gli animali, 11 vol., 377 engraved plates ?only (Wood calls for 382, some light browning) most with hand-colouring, 1 or 2 plates and text ff. loose, some plates and ff. laid down, occasional spotting and soiling, mostly to text, 9 vol. uniformly bound in modern half vellum, gilt spines with red morocco labels, 2 vol. in contemporary half morocco, slightly rubbed, both housed in modern half vellum slip-cases (same binding as other 9 vol.), [Nissen ZBI 971; Wood p.301], 4to, Naples, [1829]-1859; and Davies Sherborn's detailed collation of the work in 'Journal of the Soc. For Bibliography of Natural History' (12).
⁂ Copies of the above survey of the animal kingdom of Southern Italy are extremely rare. We can trace no complete copy at auction. Antiquariat Junk offered a copy in 1979 with 380 plates and the Bradley Martin copy (Sotheby's NY, 1989, hammer $31,000) had 384 plates. This work, edited by Oronzio Gabriele Costa (1787-1867) professor at the University of Naples and continued by his son Achille, is bibliographically very complex and collations vary.
