Traité Générale des Pesches, et Histoire des Poissons, 4 vol. in 12, first edition, 250 folding engraved plates, and 3 duplicate plates, a few ff. with repairs to margins or strengthening at gutter, occasional marginal worming, 'Bibliotheca Tiliana' bookplates, and ink-stamps to titles and final plate versos of each vol., later half morocco, spines slightly faded with black morocco labels, [Cole & Watts, pp. 8-29; Dean 338; Nissen, Schöne Fischbücher 52; Westwood, p. 2], folio, Paris, 1769-82.

A rare complete copy of "one of the finest works on fishing and fisheries in any language" (Westwood p.82).

Henri Louis Duhamel (1700-1782) was an exponent of the French enlightenment and wrote quite a number of books of scientific as well of economic interest. In 1732 he was appointed 'inspecteur général de la marine'. This monumental work on fishes and fishing shows the enormous economic importance of this branch of industry. The publication was an integral part of the 'Descriptions des Arts et Métiers' and was often sold separately.

Complete copies should have 250 plates. Our copy has one duplicate plate and 2 variant plates which are not included in the total count of 250. Nissen quotes 248 in error.
