Africa.- Bruce (James) Voyage en Nubie et en Abyssinie, 6 vol. including atlas vol., first French edition, translated by M.Castera, 7 engraved maps (of which 4 folding, a few splits at foldlines, 'Carte ou est tracée la Route' with short tear into map), 81 engraved plates (of which 19 double-page), double-page plates and folding maps in atlas vol. mounted on paper stubs, half-titles, engraved title vignettes, occasional foxing and browning, Philippe de Vilmorin bookplates to front pastedowns, contemporary calf, rich gilt spines with red and black morocco labels to spines, slight wear to extremities, [Brunet p.1283; Cox p.389], 4to, Paris, Hôtel de Thou & Plassan, 1790-92.
⁂ A fascinating exploration of Africa by James Bruce. During his journey, Bruce not only learnt about the customs and languages of the area, but his work included the various flora and fauna, such as cyperus papyrus, hyenas and giraffes.
This copy belonged to Philippe de Vilmorin, who was a noted French botanist, plant collector, and member of the celebrated Vilmorin family of horticulturists.
