Military.- Vegetius Renatus (Flavius) De re militari libri quatuor, collation: a4 A-Y6 Z8 complete, title ruled in red and with woodcut vignette, numerous fine woodcut illustrations, most full-page, woodcut initials and printer's device on verso of final leaf, a couple of minor marginal defects, occasional light browning, some water-staining at beginning and to corners near end, title with slight worming with loss of text and slightly affecting woodcut on verso, some foxing, contemporary limp vellum, soiled, lacking ties, folio (322 x 210mm.), Paris, Christian Wechel, 1532.
⁂ First edition published in France of this important work on Roman warfare which became a military guide in the Middle Ages. The splendid series of woodcuts include pneumatic beds, boots for walking in the water, diving dresses, improved firearms, siege guns and armour.
