Smith (Sally Lou, binder).- Maugham (William Somerset) Cakes and Ale, one of 1,000 copies signed by the author and Graham Sutherland, frontispiece and illustrations by Sutherland, bound in dark blue goatskin, by Sally Lou Smith, with inlaid panel of teal onlaid with patches of pink, green, red, rose, burgundy and brown goatskin scrumpled to resemble flower heads with gilt circle to centre, within red goatskin border, spine lettered in gilt, green and pink Japanese paper endleaves and doublures, t.e.g., others uncut, signed ''SLS.'' at foot of rear turn-in, custom morocco-backed, drop-back box, 8vo (binding 233 x 165mm.), [1954].
⁂ Sally Lou Smith (1925-2007) was a Fellow and President of Designer Bookbinders and a highly regarded teacher of bookbinding. Although born and raised in America she spent most of her career in Britain. A comprehensive survey of her work appeared in The New Bookbinder 21 (2001).
