Fossils.- Sowerby (George Brettingham, Jr., 1812-1884) Album comprising 22 leaves of original watercolour drawings of fossil remains of Cheltenham and Vicinity, watercolour and bodycolour, some heightened with white, many illustrations with accompanying pen and brown ink inscription underneath identifying the fossil, on Whatman wove paper, some sheets with watermark date '1831', each leaf approx. 200 x 260 mm (7 7/8 x 10 1/4 in), some minor surface dirt and light browning, some scattered spotting visible, burgundy morocco, upper cover gilt with decorative border and title, spine with minor scuffs, some rubbing, scuffs and scrapes to upper cover, oblong 4to, [circa 1840]

Exceptionally fine collection of detailed studies. A directly comparable album, albeit with 148 original drawings, is held in the National History Museum (see acc. 348554). Sowerby was a British naturalist, illustrator, and conchologist. He collaborated with his father, George Brettingham Sowerby I, on important works such as Thesaurus Conchyliorum and other illustrated publications about molluscs.
