Theatre Playbills.- [Collection of c.220 theatre playbills for the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden], 1 with contemporary ink inscription stating 'closed in consequence of the Death of the Princess Augusta', a few loose, some folding, a few repairs to verso, occasional light offsetting, browning or surface staining, occasional trimming sometimes with loss to text, some fraying and tearing sometimes affecting or with loss to text, disbound, folio, 1840-41.
⁂ Theatre Royal, Covent Garden under the management of Madame Vestris covering a large part of the 1840-41 season. Included in this collection is the highly successful run of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', the first largely uncut performance of Midsummer Night's Dream since the Restoration. Madame Vestris's performance as Oberon began a tradition of female Oberons on the stage, lasting around 70 years in British theatre. Other plays of interest include a Christmas pantomime adapted from 'Castle of Otranto', and 'The Embassy' with Ellen Tree.
