Music.- Haydn (Joseph) Dr Haydn's VI Original Canzonettas for the Voice with an Accompaniment for the Piano-Forte, first edition, signed by the composer on title, engraved title and 30pp. of engraved music, p.15 with small loss to lower blank corner, occasional pencil annotation, some light spotting and offsetting, Printed for the Author & Sold by him at No.1 Bury Street, St. James's, [c.1794] bound with c.155pp. of engraved music by various composers, these in similar condition but with occasional ink annotation, the odd stain or tear and few repairs, front free endpaper working loose, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, red morocco spine label lettered "Haydn Bowie McDonald Songs &c" in gilt, small paper label to head of spine, small stain to upper cover, rubbed and rather worn at extremities with loss to corners, joints split at foot but holding, 4to.
⁂ A collection of English songs issued during Haydn's last and most celebrated visit to England in 1794. The collection is dedicated to salonnière and poet Anne Hunter (1742-1821), who is chiefly remembered for writing the texts to at least nine of Haydn's 14 English songs.
Provenance: Amelia Sophia Murray 1795 (ownership inscription to pastedown). Lady Amelia Sophie Murray was daughter of the 4th Duke Atholl and wife of James Drummond, 8th Viscount Strathallan.
