Aves, first edition, 114 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates, many heightened with gum arabic, foxing to title and endpapers, occasional light foxing or very light browning, contemporary half calf, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, retaining original backstrip, light rubbing, [Nissen ZBI 3868], 4to, Smith, Elder and Co., 1849.
⁂ One of South Africa's premier colour plate books. This the bird volume only from the 5 volume set that also covered fish, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates. The bird volume is by far the largest, covering some 40% of the total plate count for the complete work.
