Lot 237
Botany.- Nature-printing.- Kniphof (Johann Hieronymous) Botanica in originali pharmaceutica, 120 hand-coloured nature-printed plates only, Erfurt, Johann Michael Funcke, 1733.
Estimate: £3,500 - 4,500
Description
Botany.- Nature printing.- Kniphof (Johann Hieronymous) Botanica in originali pharmaceutica, 120 hand-coloured nature-printed plates only (of 216), lacking E-2F2 (pp.17-116) and all after 3D2 (pp.191-196), occasional short tear or small portion of marginal loss to text and plates, some staining, foxed and browned, contemporary half calf, sympathetically rebacked and recornered, preserving original gilt backstrip and spine label, rather worn at extremities, rubbed, [Nissen BBI 1074], folio, Erfurt, Johann Michael Funcke, 1733.
⁂ A rare early example of nature-printing. Kniphof was one of the first to investigate the commercial possibilities of the process. His technique used printer's ink and a uniformly flat pressure to make the impression, with the resulting black-and-white images then coloured by hand. This edition was seemingly preceded by another printed in the same year with 400 plates but no text in 2 vol. (Nissen 1073).
