Herbert (Sir Thomas) Some Yeares Travels into Divers Parts of Asia and Afrique. Describing especially the two famous Empires, the Persian, and great Mogull...With a revivall of the first Discoverer of America, additional engraved title (some ink smudges and early annotation, short tear without loss and other neat marginal repairs), engraved illustrations, lacking final 2 leaves of Index ?and initial blank, F4 portion of loss to head affecting only ruled border, 2R3 small hole affecting headline, occasional marginal annotation in an early hand (sometimes trimmed), the occasional tear and repair, generally marginal but a few times affecting text or with tiny loss (see O2, R1, Sig. V), some staining and light browning, modern antique-style calf, [STC 13191], small folio, R[ichard] B[ishop] for Jacob Blome and Richard Bishop, 1638.
⁂ Second edition, considerably revised and expanded from the first edition of 1634. Herbert accompanied the mission led by Sir Dodmore Cotton to the court of the King of Persia, arriving in the Persian Gulf in January 1627-8. Cotton died in July of the same year, but Herbert continued, making an extensive tour of the kingdom and returning to England at the end of 1629. The work includes an illustration of a dodo on p.347. The final section is entitled "Madoc ap Owen Gwyneth discovered America above three hundred yeeres before Columbus" (pp.355-364).
