Harris (Walter) Pharmacologia Anti-Empirica: or A Rational Discourse of Remedies both Chymical and Galenical, first edition, initial imprimatur f. and final advertisement f., title with ownership inscription "Tho. Dale M.D. 1790" and trimmed at fore-edge, bookplate of Reuben Melmoth to verso, few instances of ink passage-marking or annotation in an early hand (see K7, V3v), occasional passage-marking in later pencil, few small marginal defects, some light soiling, spotting and browning, upper hinge cracked, modern half calf, extremities little rubbed, [Norman 993; Wing H885], 8vo, for Richard Chiswell, 1683.

Separate chapters are devoted to each of the six traditional 'great remedies': antimony, mercury, vitriol, iron ("chalybeats"), quinine ("cortex" or "American bark" or "Jesuit’s powder"), and opium. The work also includes discussion of the Philosopher's Stone ("probably a meer Collusion and Trick") and popular amulets and charms.
