Laud (William) A Speech Delivered in the Starr-Chamber...At the Censure, of John Bastwick, Henry Burton, & William Prinn; Concerning pretended Innovations In the Church, with initial and final blank (the former with few short tears), title with woodcut ornament incorporating crown, rose and thistle, woodcut head-pieces & decorative initials, lower hinge broken, modern red morocco, gilt, spine ends and corners slightly rubbed, [STC 15307], small 4to, Richard Badger, 1637.
⁂ One of several imprints dated 1637. On 14 June 1637, William Prynne, already censured, fined, imprisoned and disfigured by the state under Archbishop Laud, was further punished. The Starr Chamber decreed that the remains of his ears be removed, sentenced him to life in prison, and levied a fine of 5,000 pounds. The two men were involved in a vicious ongoing dispute regarding Laud's policy and the suppression of Puritans.
