Botany.- Digby (Sir Kenelm) A Discourse Concerning the Vegetation of Plants, first edition, title within typographic border, final errata f., endpapers and last few ff. brittle and slightly frayed at fore-edge but no text loss, some spotting, light browning to margins, later vellum, minor surface soiling, [Wing D1432], 12mo, J[ohn]. G[rismond]. for John Dakins, 1661.
⁂ Read before the nascent Royal Society in 1660, the Discourse covers the germination, nutrition and growth of plants in chemical and mechanical terms. Digby's work was significant for its early recognition of the importance of air in plant life. Rare at auction, we cannot trace a copy since 2000.
Provenance: Royal College of Physicians (bookplate with withdrawn ink-stamp; circular ink-stamp to title and front free endpaper); Kenneth Garth Huston (bookplate to front free endpaper).
