Asia.- Price (William) A Grammar of the Three Principal Oriental Languages, Hindoostanee, Persian, and Arabic, first edition, errata leaf and advertisement leaf at end, modern half calf, spine gilt with red label, uncut, 4to, 1823.
*** A tri-lingual grammar, treating Persian and Hindustani in parallel and Arabic in a separate section, prepared for the use of candidates for service with the East India Company by William Price (1771-1830), retired ladies’ shoemaker and linguistic autodidact.
There are two states of this book, one with separate pagination for each section, as in this copy, and another with continuous pagination. The final two pages in this copy are an advertisement for Netherton House, Worcester, where Price taught oriental languages, listing the faculty, costs, and terms of the school. Chinese instruction is offered at a cost of twenty guineas per annum, but Arabic, Persian, and Hindustani are offered as part of the regular curriculum. Library Hub lists copies of both states of the book but only the copy at Ushaw College appears to contain this advertisement.
