China.- Martini (Martino) Sinicae historiae decas prima, first edition, half-title, title with woodcut device, woodcut initials, ornaments and a few illustrations, with the final blank, small rust-spot to title, a very good clean copy, contemporary vellum, a little rubbed and soiled, short split to spine along label, two small wormholes to lower cover, [Cordier BS 580; Löwendahl 120; Lust 412; Morrison II p. 453], small 4to, Munich, Lucas Straub for Johannes Wagner, 1658.
⁂ Martino Martini (1614-1661), a Jesuit missionary, intended to write a series of volumes spanning all of Chinese history as a follow up to his successful work on Chinese geography Novus Atlas Sinensis (1655). This work was the first and only part he wrote, which tells the story of China from Creation to 0 C.E. It includes detailed descriptions of Chinese culture and religion as well as politics and successions.
