Gill (Eric) An album of c.120 wood-engravings on various hand-made papers, comprising much of Gill's output whilst at Ditchling, 13 signed or initialled by the artist, 4 printed in gold on black, 3 with hand-colouring, most tipped onto album leaves, original half morocco with "Eric Gill" lettered on spine, lower cover detached, rubbing and wear to extremities, 4to, 1908-24.
⁂ A superb album, that encompasses Gill's first wood-engraving for Ditchling (Physick 1, his first recorded wood-engraving, this in two states) and his last (271). Highlights include: an impressions of Crucifix, Chalice and Host (45) and Crucifix (89) in gold on black paper; an example of St. George and the Dragon (90) initialed and hand-coloured; signed examples of Ascension (140), Madonna and Child (154), Madonna and Child with base (155), Nude Crucifix (192) and The Plait (195); an example of Clare (196) with hand-colouring; and examples of rare prints St. Sebastian (200), Crucifix, robed (258), Madonna and Child (268), no copies of which were in the artist's personal file.
